Hi Oli,

sounds like a great evening. Many of these people you write about have portfolio careers - i.e. are have more than one source of income from one employer. This work style is becoming increasingly popular and as you know Barrie and I have a book called "And what do you do? 10 steps to creating a portfolio career" coming out on 15th October. I love hearing stories like Rick above - I did the same thing 3 years ago after taking redundancy - I have never looked back. More money, more fun and more independence - never worked so hard either but now it has a passion to it !

Oli,
Great post. Very front of mind for me right now having "gone it alone" in April of this year, in the midst of all the gloom. I did ask colleagues and contacts for advice, and I did find some optimism, but not much.
Having ignored the pessimists and done it anyway, I've had an amazing 5 months so far. I've never earnt this much, and I've never had such fun and felt such pride in earning it.
To the graduates that are having doors closed on them for what seem to be mainly political/quota reasons (and nothing to do with the individuals abilities); I'd say this - If you are passionate about something, genuinely passionate, then you can make a business from it and take control of your life. You might end up working more hours than your "employed" friends, but you will be happier, more in control, and quite probably financially better off. GO FOR IT.
